Hezbollah, the largest terror organization in the
world, and funded by Iran, crossed an internationally
recognized border to kidnap and kill Israeli soldiers and launched missiles – unprovoked - into Israel from southern Lebanon to start the war in July 2006.
Iran-backed Hezbollah conducted a cross-border raid,
killing eight Israeli soldiers and abducting two others
while launching a massive barrage of rocket attacks on
northern Israeli towns and communities. Israel responded
with military operations aimed at destroying Hezbollah’s military capability. Hezbollah launched more than 4,000 rockets at Israeli towns and cities, killing 44 civilians. IDF forces identified 532 Hezbollah extremists were killed by IDF forces, which itself sustained 119 fatalities. Estimates of Lebanese civilian casualties range from 850 to 1,191.
Since then, a peace treaty was brokered by the UN calling for the disarmament of Hezbollah,
for withdrawal of Israel from Lebanon, and for the
deployment of Lebanese soldiers and an enlarged (UNIFIL)
force in southern Lebanon. Israel has since left southern Lebanon yet Hezbollah has yet to be disarmed, and is continuously rearming itself.
