ReTold: Michelle Soffen & Zach Schaffer's Story
It’s easy to post, but it’s not as easy to act. Social media platforms have become another source of news consumption for many users; reading articles and thoughts posted by friends, organizations, and brands. While it’s quite simple to like, share, or comment on content within your newsfeed, the interaction often ends there. Not for Michelle Soffen and Zach Schaffer, two FFT members that participated in NYC’s Boot Camp in 2015 & 2016, respectively.
Driven by conversations that developed on Soffen’s Facebook posts, Soffen saw an opportunity to take the conversation offline in hopes of finding a solution to the challenges Zionist progressive individuals face when it comes to supporting Israel. She shared, “I haven’t felt fully welcome in either circle. I feel like a lot of Zionist advocacy has become very right-winged and though there’s a place for that, it doesn’t totally align with my perspective.” She suggested a live meeting to discuss these issues, and many people expressed interest - including Schaffer who helped Soffen recruit for the event. Schaffer was excited to help out, “I thought this was an awesome idea, and I’m really excited to see what kind of conversations come out of this and how we can continue beyond this. This is hopefully just a start and not a one off event to support each other and to find ways for Progressive Zionists in NYC and our own networks stand up for all of the causes that we believe in all at the same time.” ... The Way Forward on Settlements: Advice for Trump From Two Veteran Mideast Negotiators by Dennis Ross & David Makovsky - January 23, 2017
Remember! This topic is polarizing. The international community has decided to adopt the settlements issue…so we just have to deal.
Key points when discussing settlements:
-- 80-90% of settlers reside in the 5 blocs, which is also where the majority of the construction takes place;
-- both sides publicly recognize the 5 blocs will be excluded from any future Palestinian state;
-- settlements are not legal or illegal - Judea & Samaria (West Bank) is disputed land.
Don’t Defund the U.N. — Find Other Ways to Help Israel by Daniel Runde - January 9, 2017
When asked: Should the U.S. defund the UN because Obama abstained?
Positive messenger response: The U.S. should always defend Israel, its greatest ally and only true democracy in the Middle East, in any international arena. Regarding the U.S. funding the UN, we believe it should take a wholistic approach as the world’s democratic leader.

Diaspora Jews Have No Right to Impose Our Policy Preferences on Israel by Benjamin Gladstone - January 30, 2017
2 Critical Elements: While it is important to be informed on current affairs and formulate opinions with regards to Israeli policy,
-- We must always be conscious of the company with which we reveal our criticisms of Israeli politics. People not educated on the topic or familiar with the rhetoric may mistake our criticism of Israeli politics, for criticism of the Nation. Context is critical.
-- Its easy to comment on Israeli policy when you live thousands of miles away.
