ReTold: Justin Ellis' Story

As an Israel advocacy educator and the president of Fuel For Truth, my days are happily consumed with studying the national and regional history which brought us to where we are today and keeping pace with the events influencing where we may be tomorrow. Appraising Israel’s future, the majority of what I see is incredibly positive despite our tribally wired and media induced inclination to believe the sky is always falling.

Israel certainly faces challenges, some better known than others and many comparative to fellow developed nations, but the outlook is incredibly promising and certainly far better than those nostalgic for an era long gone would have you believe. However, there is one issue that threatens Israel uniquely and requires immediate action. And no, it's not the Palestinians. It's us. We in the diaspora live in an era in which the Jewish connection to Israel, or each other, is not guaranteed. Nearly seven decades after six million of our brethren were systematically exterminated in the Holocaust, nearly seven decades after 850,000 of our kinsman were ethnically cleansed from Arab and Islamic lands, and nearly seven decades after the establishment of the first Jewish sovereign in 2,000 years, our collective memory is facing amnesia, apathy, and even hostility.

Throughout North America and Western Europe there is a growing number of young Jews who have never... READ MORE...

50th Anniversary of the Reunification of Jerusalem

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Six Day War and the reunification of Jerusalem. In June of 1967 Egypt, Jordan and Syria surrounded Israel’s borders and once again threatened the Jewish state with annihilation. Against all odds Israel defeated the Arab armies in unprecedented fashion, requiring just six days to repel the enemy forces. The outcome of the war resulted in Jewish sovereignty over our holiest sites for the first time in 2000 years, and forever changed the dynamic of the Arab-Israeli conflict.

FFT celebrates this historic victory and commemorates those who gave their lives in defense of Israel fifty years ago. We proudly recognize that since liberating Jerusalem, Israel has respected the rights of all peoples to access and worship at their respective holy sites. Following the war, in pursuit of peace, Israel offered much of the land it had conquered, culminating in the 1979 peace treaty with Egypt, which holds to this day.

ReLearn: Advocacy Tips & Resources

Advocacy Tip

Take a deep breath. In advocacy, we have a biological flight or fight response when we hear something that offends us, especially when it’s a conversation about something as existentially important as Israel. We need to remind ourselves to shut off that evolutionary ingrained response, take a deep breath, and respond respectfully. Always make sure you’re engaging in a civil conversation.

Behind the Silken Curtain

by Bartley Crum

A Personal Account of Anglo-American Diplomacy in Palestine and the Middle East.

In 1946, the US government requested that 100,000 Jewish refugees be admitted immediately to Palestine from the DP camps. The British government resisted and at last set up a committee to investigate and recommend a decision. The British thought it almost impossible that the group would unanimously vote for letting them go - which in turn happened. This book is the personal account of one of the members appointed to that committee, following him from DP camps in Europe, to Cairo, and then to Jewish and Arab cities in Palestine during 1946.

If it were as simple as land: If asked why Israel doesn’t just pull out of the West Bank, remind them what happened in Gaza. Israel unilaterally withdrew and gave full control to the Palestinians as a gesture toward peace and it resulted in a Hamas coup, tens of thousands of rockets, terror tunnels, and a humanitarian crisis. What would prevent that from happening again?

by TOVAH LAZAROFF  – June 1, 2017

There are Palestinian problems that don’t involve Israel: The Palestinian Authority is trying to deprive the people of Gaza of electricity in order to undermine the ruling Hamas. Ending the PA-Hamas conflict is an essential ingredient for making peace with Israel.
