ReTold: Erica Sperber's Story

16640927_3612329110987_1480611695143446088_n.jpgI would be lying if I said I remember which attack it was that sparked my interest in learning self-defense. Sadly, they all seem to blend together at this point. Shootings, bombings, and nightclub stabbings seem to be, almost eerily, the new norm. Maybe it was the nightclub in Orlando, or the runner who was killed on her normal training path, or maybe it was my increased anxiety every time I entered the subway that drove me to learn more about self-defense. Or maybe it was all of this mixed with the free admission and free wine on a rooftop on a beautiful warm spring day to learn more about The Legion...

After completing Fuel for Truth I felt more comfortable speaking about Israel and the climate of the Middle East. I felt equipped with the knowledge needed to do my part in America—to spread positive PR amidst the negative media attention Israel often unfortunately receives. However, I was also aware that anti-Semitism is on the rise and I was nervous of an impending terror attack in my beloved New York. As a small, 5'2, 24-year-old female I also felt I would be completely vulnerable if an attack did happen. Although I am physically fit, and just completed a half marathon, throwing a punch was foreign to me.

The free admission and wine, increased attacks in the spring of 2016, and my own fears as a young lady, created the perfect storm to get me signed up for The Legion. It was time for me to learn how to defend myself. In 2015 there were 914 reported (keyword: reported) anti-Semitic hate crimes in the United States. On just one Monday in February 2017 there were 21 bomb threats called into 13 Jewish centers across the country. ...   READ MORE...

ReLearn: Advocacy Tips & Resources

Advocacy Tip
Our job is advocates is to build up the story of the Jewish people. This means our focus should be on telling our narrative and not on tearing down someone else's.

It's also important to remember that many individuals we are speaking with may be more inclined to sympathize or identify with the Palestinian narrative.

If we attack a narrative someone else is supportive of, we immediately put them into a defensive posture. This prevents them from being able to hear our narrative. They either disengage or dig deeper into their previously held position.

Our best advocacy is in building up our own narrative, and not attacking someone else's.

BLIND JUMP: The Story of Shaike Dan
by Rudolf Steiner

Blind Jump is the story of the amazing exploits of Shaike Dan. During World War II, Shaike Dan volunteered to parachute behind enemy lines in Romania on behalf of British Intelligence.

His jump had two objectives: to locate the prison camp where 1,400 Allied Air Force crewman, downed when bombing the Ploesti oil fields in Romania, were being held, and also to find ways to get them out of Romania so that they could go back into action and resume their contribution to the war effort.

The second objective was to try to rescue Jews from Eastern Europe and get them to Palestine.

Thus began his remarkable career of rescuing Jews behind the Iron Curtain, an endeavor that continued almost up to the very present.
