Anti-terrorist fence cuts attacks by 90%

Dear FFT Member,

On Friday, July 9, 2004, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled against the State of Israel on the legality of the Anti-Terrorist Security Fence. While only an advisory ruling and not legally binding, nonetheless the implications may be severe. Israel submitted a written argument on the grounds that the court had no jurisdiction to make this unprecedented decision on an internal security matter of Israel's- a matter that can only be resolved through political negotiations. This position is supported by the United States and many European powers.
Israel has further argued that her own Supreme Court is capable of ensuring the legality of the fence, as it recently ruled that certain parts of the fence must be removed because it was creating too many hardships for Palestinian Arabs. Below you will find seven key points that summarize the Israeli argument for the anti-terrorism security fence that is saving lives on both sides.

* Doesn't yesterday's terrorist attack in Tel Aviv -- (carried out by Arafat's Fatah faction - an attack that killed a woman and injured Jews and Arabs alike) -- point out a need for nonviolent ways, such as the fence, to protect innocent people from terrorists?

* What would America do if time and again we had been attacked by terrorists who infiltrated our stores, pizza parlors, buses and holiday celebrations to deliberately kill women and children? Wouldn't we want a fence?

* Israel deeply regrets that the security fence is needed. Israel knows that the fence can cause inconveniences. But isn't saving just one life worth it? Shouldn't they stop other mothers from losing their children in terrorist attacks?

* Until the terrorism stops , Israel, like any other country, should not be told by an international court how to protect its own citizens.

* The security fence is a temporary and nonviolent way to reduce terrorism. It is already saving lives. When the terrorism stops , the fence can be taken down.

* The route of the fence has been determined by how to stop terrorists from killing innocent people. However, in order to reduce inconveniences to Palestinians, the Israeli Supreme Court has ruled that the fence must in some places be moved to make things easier for the Palestinians. Israel is a democracy committed to rule of law and will indeed follow this court decision.

* Palestinian leaders use the security fence as an excuse to terrorize Israel even though they know that Israel has offered to remove the fence when the terrorism stops.

Click on the video link below to see just how the fence manages to slow the terrorists down. In a country that in some parts is only 8 miles wide , often times with dangerous Palestinian Arab cities within one or two miles of Israeli cities, this fence can mean the difference between life and death. It saves lives on both sides. When the violence stops, the fence can be removed.

Arab public opinion about the fence (In support of the fence!)

ARAB PUBLIC OPINION ON THE FENCE

Tawfik Abu Baker, Palestinian Parliament member:
The Palestinians and their suicide attacks are what
forced Israel to build a fence.
(“Al Dastour”, Jordan, Jan 7 2004)

Dr. Ahsan Al Trabelsi, publicist
Yasser Arafat, the PA and the militant fundamentalists
are responsible for building this fence. No one else built it.
(“Ilaf” website, Jan 13, 2004)

Abed El Rahman Rashid, “Al Sharq Al Awsat” board
Had the Arabs accepted an agreement with Israel three
years ago, they would have saved 1500 Palestinian lives, and prevented the building of the fence.
